On the afternoon of May 8th, the opening ceremony of St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou Joint Cancer Center of Sun Yat-Sen University Precision Medicine Science Center was solemnly held at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. Prof. Hongliang Tao(vice director of Sun Yat-Sen University Precision Medicine Science Center and director of Biomedical Research Center of Nanchan g Research Institute of Sun Yat-sen University), Prof. Zunfu Ke(Director of Pathology Dept. Of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen  University), Mr. Xiaoming Tu(general manager of St. Stamford Medical Group), Mr. Daoxuan Lin(Medical Director of St. Stamford Medical Group), Mrs. Nongyi Jin(chief executive officer of St. Stamford Medical Group), Mr. Shaohua Lin(general manager of St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou), Mr. Xinwei Lin(vice general manager of St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou), Director Dai Wenyan and Director Huang Deliang attended the ceremony.

On the opening ceremony, Director Daoxuan Lin first extended a warm welcome and heartfelt gratefulness to all the participants. Director Daoxuan Lin said that it used to be hard to help cancer patients with the similar condition get same treatment efficacy from a particular treatment or medicine because of the tumor heterogeneity, but the application of precision medicine greatly improves the treatment pertinence and effectiveness because it offers personalized prevention, diagnosis and treatment based on the individual condition, which makes sure every patient gets best treatment efficacy. Director Daoxuan Lin also expressed high expectations on the cooperation with Sun Yat-Sen University Precision Medicine Science Center and believed that the application of precision medicine will definitely make progress in the field of oncology.

Precision medicine is an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person. This approach will allow doctors and researchers to predict more accurately which treatment and prevention strategies for a particular disease will work in which groups of people. It is in contrast to an one-drug-fits-all approach, in which disease treatment and prevention strategies are developed for the average person, with less consideration for the differences between individuals.

Prof. Zunfu Ke gave a thorough explanation of the cooperation on clinical medicine and medical research. Sun Yat-Sen University Precision Medicine Science Center has a large-scale sample library which owns about ten millions of biomedical samples, and it has made a great breakthrough in the field of cancer treatment, especially stomach cancer, lymphoma, liver cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and etc. On clinical medicine, Sun Yat-Sen University Precision Medicine Science Center will offer St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou high-quality testing resources, so as to make sure every cancer patient get quality test items and truly enjoy precision medicine service; on medical research, both sides will work together, fully absorb and master advanced knowledge both at home and abroad. Prof. Zunfu Ke also mentioned that the cooperation intention with St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou first appeared during the early period of the science center, but it is only now that the cooperation is reached. With the establishment of the joint cancer center, both sides will work together and promote precision medicine to a higher level.

Prof. Honglinag Tao believed that the cooperation between both sides is highly complementary and mutually beneficial. Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou is a good platform for the transformation of medical research and the implementation of the medical program. The starting point and the ultimate purpose of the cooperation is to make more contribution to human health and finally realizes mutual benefit and common development

General manager Mr. Tu emphasized that:"Our group always provides vigorous support for scientific research. Clinical staff should improve their understanding of precision medicine in the field of clinical cancer treatment, and take an active part in the clinical promotion and practical application of new medical technology. We also want to cultivate more innovative talents of science and technology through our cooperation with Sun Yat-Sen University Precision Medicine Science Center, so as to better foster the development of precision medicine and better protect people’s health.”

Whereafter the signing and opening ceremony was successfully completed, and manager Mr. Tu awarded certificates to Prof. Hongliang Tao and Prof. Zunfu Ke, who are employed as the visiting professors of the joint cancer center.

St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital has already started the application of precision medicine; the hospital has found a Breast Cancer Center in 2016 and a Lung Cancer Center in 2019. The establishment of the Joint Cancer Center not only marks St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou has reached a further level of precision medicine, but also means patients are able to get high-quality and more personalized medical service at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou.

The establishment of the joint cancer center with Sun Yat-Sen University Precision Medicine Science Center built a bridge for the application of precision medicine in the field of cancer treatment, and along with the combination of traditional cancer treatment experiences and methods, the cancer diagnosis and treatment at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Guangzhou will definitely get into a higher level!

*Surgery, in addition to the appropriate chemotherapy and radiotherapy, are effective in treating early cancer, but certain patients in late stage of cancer may not be tolerate surgery well as they can be relatively weak.
