American Cancer Society provides an update of 5-year relative survival statistics based on nasopharyngeal cancer stages and it’s as follow:
Nasopharyngeal Cancer Stage 0: 95%
Nasopharyngeal Cancer Stage I: 72%;
Nasopharyngeal Cancer Stage II: 64%;
Nasopharyngeal Cancer Stage III: 62%;
Nasopharyngeal Cancer Stage IV: 38%.
Early treatment is the important factors to improve the 5-year relative survival rate of nasopharyngeal cancer. Doctors use staging information to help plan treatment and to predict a patient’s prognosis.

TNM System
The stage of a cancer helps determine how serious the cancer is. Doctors also use cancer’s stage to recommend patient cancer treatment.
The staging system most often used for nasopharyngeal cancer is the American Joint Committee (AJCC) TNM system, which is based on 3 key pieces of information:
The T refers to the size and extent of the main tumor. The main tumor is usually called the primary tumor.
T1, T2, T3, and T4: Refers to the size and/or extent of the main tumor. The higher the number after the T, the larger the tumor or the more it has grown into nearby tissues.
The N refers to the number of nearby lymph nodes that have cancer.
N1, N2, and N3: Refers to the number and location of lymph nodes that contain cancer. The higher the number after the N is the more lymph nodes that contain cancer.
The M refers to whether the cancer has metastasized. This means that the cancer has spread from the primary tumor to other parts of the body.
M0, M1: Cancer has not spread to other parts of the body.
(The treatment for different stages of nasopharyngeal cancer is only for reference)
Nasopharyngeal Cancer stage 0: Tis (Carcinoma in situ), N0, M0; Cancer cells only present in the nose
Treatment for Nasopharyngeal cancer stage 0: Surgery, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Gene Targeted Therapy
Nasopharyngeal Cancer stage I: T1, N0, M0 ——Cancer cells will only spread nearby the primary location;
Treatment for Nasopharyngeal Cancer stage I: Interventional Therapy, Seed Implantation, Nanoknife, Gene Targeted Therapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine, Ozone therapy.
Nasopharyngeal Cancer stage II: T1~T2, N0-N1, M0 ——the cancer has grown into other nearby lymph nodes.
Treatment for Nasopharyngeal cancer stage II: Interventional Therapy, Cryotherapy, Seed Implantation, Nanoknife, Gene Targeted Therapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine, Ozone Therapy.
Nasopharyngeal Cancer stage III: T1-T3, N0~N2, M0 —— the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes but didn’t spread to distant organ.
Treatment for Nasopharyngeal cancer stage III: Interventional Therapy, Cryotherapy, Seed Implantation, Nanoknife, Gene Targeted Therapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine, Ozone Therapy.
Nasopharyngeal Cancer stage IV: Any T stage, Any N stage, M0 – M1 —— the cancer has spread to distant organs,
Treatment for Nasopharyngeal cancer stage IV: Interventional Therapy, Cryotherapy, Seed Implantation, Nanoknife, Gene Targeted Therapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine, Ozone Therapy.
We can offer help if you are diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. Consult online or call at 02-8-822122 (Manila Office) or 0917-599-2277 (Cebu Office) for second opinion.
Different stages of nasopharyngeal cancer have different treatments. In St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, our Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) will help decide treatment for nasopharyngeal cancer patient base on their body conditions and cancer stage, size and the location of the tumor. This will help nasopharyngeal cancer patient to avoid side effect of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
