According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer stages and corresponding 5-year survival rate as follows:

Colorectal Cancer Stage I: 85%--95%;

Colorectal Cancer Stage II: 60%--80%;

Colorectal Cancer Stage III: 30%--60%;

Colorectal Cancer Stage IV: below 5%.

Early treatment is the important factors to improve the 5-year relative survival rate of colorectal cancer. Doctors use staging information to help plan treatment and to predict a patient’s prognosis.

HATTA*Rectal Cancer

HATTA was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2007. Doctors in local hospitals suggested him to take operation to remove the tumor. He refused, because he did not want to live with an ostomy bag. TNM system

The staging system most often used for colorectal cancer is TNM.

The T refers to the size and extent of the main tumor. The main tumor is usually called the primary tumor.

T1, T2, T3, T4: Refers to the size and/or extent of the main tumor. The higher the number after the T, the larger the tumor or the more it has grown into nearby tissues.

The N refers to the number of nearby lymph nodes that have cancer.

N1, N2, N3: Refers to the number and location of lymph nodes that contain cancer. The higher the number after the N, the more lymph nodes that contain cancer.

The M refers to whether the cancer has metastasized. This means that the cancer has spread from the primary tumor to other parts of the body.

M0, M1: Cancer has not spread to other parts of the body.

Colorectal Cancer Stages and Treatment

Stage 0 Colorectal Cancer: Tis (Carcinoma in situ), N0 stage, M0 stage;

Stage 0 Treatment for colorectal cancer stage 0: Polypectomy during colonoscopy

Stage I Colorectal Cancer: T1~T2, N0, M0 ——the cancer has grown through the mucosa into the submucosa.

Treatment for Stage I Clorectal Cancer : Surgery, Interventional TherapyGreen Chemotherapy, Gene Targeted Therapy, and Combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine.

Stage II Colorectal Cancer: T3~T4, N0, M0 ——the cancer has grown into other nearby tissues or organs.

Treatment for Stage II Colorectal Cancer: Surgery, Interventional Therapy, Green Chemotherapy, Gene Targeted Therapy, and Combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine.

Stage III Colorectal Cancer: any T, N1~N3, M0 —— the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes.

Stage IV Colorectal Cancer Colorectal Cancer: Any T stage, Any N stage, M1 —— the cancer has spread to distant organs.

Recurrence of Colorectal Cancer: Cancer recurrence after the treatment can be found at rectum colon, or other parts of the body.
