Cancer Research UK provides an update of 5-year relative survival statistics based on kidney cancer stages and it’s as follow:
Kidney cancer Stage I: >80%,
Kidney cancer Stage II: 75%,
Kidney cancer Stage III: 60%,
Kidney cancer Stage IV: 5%.
Early treatment is the important factors to improve the 5-year relative survival rate of kidney cancer. Doctors use staging information to help plan treatment and to predict a patient’s prognosis.
TNM system
The staging system most often used for kidney cancer is TNM.
In the TNM system:
The T refers to the size and extent of the main tumor. The main tumor is usually called the primary tumor.
T1, T2, T3, and T4: Refers to the size and/or extent of the main tumor. The higher the number after the T, the larger the tumor or the more it has grown into nearby tissues.
The N refers to the number of nearby lymph nodes that have cancer.
N1, N2, and N3: Refers to the number and location of lymph nodes that contain cancer. The higher the number after the N is the more lymph nodes that contain cancer.
The M refers to whether the cancer has metastasized. This means that the cancer has spread from the primary tumor to other parts of the body.
M0: Cancer has not spread to other parts of the body.
M1: Cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
(The treatment for different stages of kidney cancer is only for reference.)
Kidney cancer stage I: T1, N0, M0 ——Cancer is less than 7cm, and completely in the kidney;
Treatment for kidney cancer stage I: Surgery (nephrectomy), Interventional Therapy, Cryotherapy, Particle Implantation, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), green chemotherapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine.
Kidney cancer stage II: T2, N0, M0 —— Cancer is more than 7 cm in diameter, but still completely in the kidney;
Treatment for kidney cancer stage II: Surgery (nephrectomy), Interventional Therapy, Cryotherapy, Particle Implantation, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), green chemotherapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine.
Kidney cancer stage III: T1-T3, N1 or any N, M0 —— Cancer has spread to the adrenal gland or main vein, and one lymph node metastasis;
Treatment for kidney cancer stage III: Interventional Therapy, Cryotherapy, Particle Implantation, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), green chemotherapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine.
Kidney cancer stage IV: T4 or Any T, Any N, M0-M1 ——Cancer has spread to multiple lymph nodes and nearby or distant organs.
Treatment for kidney cancer stage IV: Interventional Therapy, Cryotherapy, Particle Implantation, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), green chemotherapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine.
We can offer help if you are diagnosed with kidney cancer, for second opinion, make an appointment online or contact us at 02-8-822122 (Manila office) or at 0917-599-2277 (Cebu Office).
Different stages of kidney cancer have different treatments. In St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, our Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) will tailor treatment plans for kidney cancer patients based on their body conditions and cancer stage, size and the location of the tumor, which will help kidney cancer patients save their kidneys from resection, and avoid side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
